Yahoo censoring status messages?

December 27th 2007 in Pidgin, Yahoo

I discovered this when i tried to set my status message to “Benazir Bhutto killed..” it just didn’t reflect. Then i tried Pidgin’s default away message “I’m not here right now” didn’t work.. But surprisingly “I’m not here right away” works.. Harsh confirmed the behavior. Seems as if yahoo is blocking some words such as “now” and “Bhutto” in various combinations in a sentence (“now” and “Bhutto” do work as status messages). At first i though it was a problem with pidgin. But then Ankur confirmed that these words were not working with even the windows yahoo messenger client! I really don’t know what yahoo is trying to achieve but its really irritating 😐

Tarun, even “Im not here right now” doesn’t work! I could understand if they were blocking Bhutto cause of political reasons, but even this?

Did any one tried to read their Privacy policy for the status messege ?? Does it give them tje right to filter and if it does then what are the criteria for the filtering ??

Choto, Its not really censoring, its some kind of glitch in their system.

From the little R&D I did under Kalpik’s “guidance” πŸ˜‰ I feel it is (auto-correct) bug and not censorship. If it is censorship, they would just ban/modify the message whether it is in lower case or upper case.

However, the fact remains that there is some (buggy) code written to check the status messages.

@ Choto Cheeta: Chill man! πŸ™‚ Privacy policies are for sensitive private things. What’s so private or sensitive about a status message?

Just a shocker today! I couldn’t keep status message of my choice. I tried the following:

– Happy New Year
– Happy New Year to all
– Happy New Year to all! πŸ™‚
– Happy New Yr
– Happy New Year 2008

Yahoo Messenger is censoring googles sites, and it does not allow links to google owned sites (for example to picasaweb) in status messages. The other, seemingly random censorship is only to divert people’s attention from the real thing. This is a ususal practice by Yahoo. Did you forget that the GMail invites were automatically deleted from Yahoo Mail (they did not appear even in the Spam folder)? I advice all of you to switch to GTalk.

Here is a repository i use on my gutsy install which always contains the latest builds of Pidgin and Rhythmbox. So no more hunting for debs or compiling sources πŸ˜€

Steps to add the repository:

1. Open Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal)

2. Type “gksu  gedit /etc/apt/sources.list”

3. Go to the end of the file and add the following onto a new […]
